Call for submissions in creative writing:

Literary Laundry is excited to announce its third call for submissions. As always, all work submitted to the journal will be considered for our writing competitions. We are offering the following cash awards: $500 for the best poem, $500 for the best short story, and $250 for the best one-act drama.

This writing competition is open to writers of all ages. Our most recent issue featured work from professors and graduate students, as well as from undergraduates. In addition to our general competition, we are also sponsoring an undergraduate-only competition, offering $250 for the best undergraduate poem, and $250 for the best undergraduate short story.

All award-winning work will be published in our bi-annual online journal and our print retrospect. Submissions are due June 1, 2011. There is no submission fee.

Graduating Seniors MATCH Corps Fellowships: Merrimack Valley

I wanted to touch base with you about a full-time job opportunity for the graduating seniors.

Match Corps:   Merrimack Valley is a full-time, 10.5-month urban education math tutoring fellowship in two high schools in the Merrimack Valley.  We are hiring 50 smart, idealistic, relentless people to work during the 2012-2013 school year.  Each Fellow works during the school day with two students at a time for five periods a day, and will have a personal caseload of 12 students all year long.  Fellows not only will drive student achievement by providing individualized instruction, but will also build personal and meaningful relationships with urban students and their families during this pioneer year of service.

SOCIAL MEDIA FOR SOCIAL CHANGE:  2012 SOCIAL MEDIA & PR CAMPAIGN STUDENT COMPETITION

The Problem:

Nearly 900,000 metro Atlanta adults are not functionally literate–28% of the population. The impact that this has on economic and social issues cannot be underestimated.  It is a contributing factor, either directly or indirectly, to workforce development, economic growth, poverty and homelessness, poor health outcomes, the education of our children, and crime.   There is more need than can possibly be met by existing resources and institutions.

The Answer:

The Literacy Alliance of Metro Atlanta (LAMA) is a practical, innovative coalition, comprised of leaders from literacy and human service providers, educational and academic organizations, and the business community.  34 member organizations have joined together to expand effective, standardized community-based literacy services.

Social Media & PR Campaign Goals:  LAMA needs a compelling and engaging social media and PR campaign to help us:

  • Raise awareness of the issue of low literacy and it negative impact on metro Atlanta’s families, communities, and businesses;
  • Increase reach, generate individual, foundation and corporate support  through volunteerism and financial support;
  • Encourage individuals to become long-term advocates and supporters of increased and strengthened literacy services throughout metro Atlanta; and
  • Increase registration for LAMA’s 2nd Annual 5K Run/ Walk for Literacy (last year we had close to 500 registrants, goal for this year is 1,000 registrants)

Submission Guidelines:

  • Research:  Provide a one –two pager of research demonstrating your understanding of the issue, LAMA’s goals and objectives and an analysis of LAMA’s social media efforts to date.
  • Summary:  Prepare an assessment and situation analysis of your plan. Creating a summary will help with identifying objectives and goals.  Incorporate your research findings to demonstrate your understanding of why social media would be effective tool for the organization (should not exceed two pages).
  • SWOT Analysis:  Prepare a chart to include an evaluation of  the Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) related to LAMA’s Social Media & PR Campaign (should not exceed one page).
  • Theme Selection:  Select the Theme of the Social Media & PR Campaign (i.e. Tagline or Key Message to run throughout the campaign and upcoming LAMA’s events).
  • Objectives:  List all of the objectives and goals for your social media plan, including a clear call to action.
  • Strategies & Tactics:  Create a chart listing your strategies and their corresponding tactics.
  • Timeline & Calendars:  Prepare an editorial plan/ calendar for one month.  The editorial plan/ calendar should include the following:  10 Blog Content Ideas, one 150-word blog post, and 20 Sample Tweets/ Facebook Status Updates
  • Measurement & Reporting: 
  • Create a list of expected results and proposed methods for measurement (e.g. Facebook Insights, Google Analytics, etc).

 

Winner Receives:

  • Cash Prize of $500
  • Invitation to the next quarterly Literacy Alliance of Metro Atlanta full membership meeting (comprised of 34+ member organizations throughout metro Atlanta) for a public award
  • Invitation to accompany the Chair of the Steering Committee to the Governor’s Office to present the winning concept for LAMA’s Social Media & PR Campaign

The Economic Development Department of the Gwinnett County Chamber is seeking a student intern for Summer 2012.  This position offers the student opportunities to gain experience in business and economic development, as well as interact with regional business and government leaders.  The intern will be closely involved in Partnership Gwinnett, a nationally recognized economic development initiative.

Job Description:   This position provides research support for the Economic Development Department.

Major Tasks, Responsibilities, and Key Accountabilities

  • Assist eight-person Economic Development team with research projects.
  • Gather data on businesses and target industries in Gwinnett County, state, and region
  • Assist Research Associate in maintaining database of target businesses and industries
  • Prepare reports on target industries and businesses
  • Review local media and maintain list of Partnership Gwinnett mentions and list of companies announcing new job numbers
  • Provide assistance with special projects as assigned
  • May occasionally oversee work done by high school interns

Qualifications, Experience and Personal Attributes

Norman Mailer College Writing Awards in Poetry & Fiction; Subs. due 4/30

MailerThe Norman Mailer Center and Writers Colony and the National Council of Teachers of English jointly sponsor the 2012 Norman Mailer High School and College Writing and Poetry Awards.

Students may submit one or more stories (within the page limits) or a self-contained section of a longer work (for example, from a novel). Submissions may be “conventional” or “experimental” and may represent any fiction tradition. However, the best work will demonstrate compelling literary merit. Open to high school and both college levels.

 The Four-Year College Fiction Writing Award Competition   is open to current full-time undergraduate students. Maximum 15 single-spaced pages.  Winner will receive the following:

  • Cash award of $10,000
  • Scholarship to the Norman Mailer Writers Colony during the summer of 2013
  • Travel and lodging to attend the Colony’s National Award Ceremony:  Funding for travel is limited to the continental United States, Alaska, and Hawaii. Canadian and other foreign students are eligible to enter.  Outside of the U.S. a $500.00 USD payment toward travel will be allowed.   Hotel will be paid as for students in the U.S.

The Poetry Award open to full time students enrolled in four-year colleges, two-year colleges, junior colleges, and technical colleges.  Students may submit one or more poems, to a maximum of 10 pages. The winner will receive:

  • Cash award of $5,000
  • Travel and lodging to attend the Colony’s National Award Ceremony:  Funding for travel is limited to the continental United States, Alaska, and Hawaii. Canadian and other foreign students are eligible to enter.  Outside of the U.S. a $500.00 USD payment toward travel will be allowed.   Hotel will be paid as for students in the U.S.

Formatting Guidelines

The writing you upload must include a title, your name, and page numbers within your file.  Please use a plain, common, and easily readable font, such as Times New Roman, 11- or 12-point.  Accepted file types: .pdf, .doc, .docx, and .txt (maximum file size: 8 megabytes).

Prizes

One winner in each category will receive a cash award and will be an honored guest at the Colony’s National Award Ceremony in New York City on October 4, 2012. Winners will be notified in early September.  Four finalists in each category will be awarded trophies. Up to fifteen semifinalists in each category will be awarded certificates.

Judging

Submissions will be read by national panels of teachers and will be judged by how well they achieve the following qualities:  handling of image, plot, character, or other elements; originality; insight, voice, and style; and overall aesthetic, emotional, or intellectual effect.  Stories that receive high ratings from the teacher panels will be submitted to a distinguished panel of authors selected by the Norman Mailer Center, who will choose the winning entry.
